Matiullah Jan, prominent Pakistani journalist, and his son unhurt after attack in Islamabad
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Two unknown motorcyclists threw a brick and damaged the screen of the car of prominent journalist and news analyst Matiullah Jan this Sunday in a broad daylight, local media reported.
Jan and his son were traveling from Islamabad to an unknown location when they were attacked in the town of Barahaku, he shared on his social media channels. “The rider was wearing a helmet and the person sitting behind him threw a brick-like piece of concrete at the car,” he was quoted saying to local media. Neither he nor his son were injured.
The journalist tried to chase and recognize the faces of the motorcyclists but they fled away, local media said. He was quoted saying that he was attacked because of “vested interests and [to] stop him from the activeness of social media and his career a journalist.” He said that this is not attacked on him, “it’s an attack on the whole journalistic community.”
“To gag, a journalist is to gag a society,” he added.
This is not the first time he has been attacked, Jan said. Local media reported that a few years ago his windshield was broken after he was chased at night by yet-to-be-identified attacker.
